Customer loyalty is vital to all kinds of businesses in all kinds of fields and the travel industry is no exception. Incentivising past customers to keep coming back is, after all, much less expensive than attracting new ones.

Frequent flyer programmes came into existence nearly 30 years ago when American Airlines introduced their AAdvantage scheme to reward their customers for their loyalty. Since then, it is estimated that more than 100 million individuals have chosen to participate in one or other of the airlines’ programmes.

Of course the most obvious way to collect air miles is by travelling. Most programmes reward travellers with a certain number of points for each mile or kilometre flown with the participating airline or one of its partners, and then the points are exchanged for a variety of benefits including free air travel, travel upgrades, access to airport lounges and a whole range of other goods and services. With each airline battling to attract and retain greater numbers of new customers, the benefits on offer vary from one to another, as do the rules for participation and the methods of calculation.

Although travelling might be the most obvious way to collect air miles, it is not, however, the only one. Many airlines work in collaboration with major credit and debit card companies, allowing air miles to be accumulated with certain purchases made using the card. In fact, in more recent years, more miles have been collected through this means than through flying.

Other popular ways to collect air miles are by staying at hotels which participate in an airline’s programme, or by booking car hire through a participating company.

Most frequent flyer programmes operate on a system which is time-dependent. In some cases, points or air miles have to be redeemed before a specified expiration date, whilst in others they expire if the account is not used for an extended period of time, usually several years.

For anyone who travels frequently for either business or pleasure and regularly uses the same airline (such as those who have holiday homes abroad), signing up with a frequent flyer programme can offer lots of benefits. If you haven’t done so yet, therefore, make some enquiries or check online to see how you can make travelling even better value for money.

Even if you don’t intend doing anything more with your holiday than lying and sunning yourself on the beach by day and relaxing in restaurants and bars in the evening, learning something of the local language can enrich your experience tremendously. Far from needing to become fluent, even just a few words can help you to win hearts, immerse yourself in the culture and even save you money!

Although many people simply don’t bother, attempting to speak the language when we are abroad should really just be considered as good manners. It demonstrates respect for the local people and their culture and is always well-appreciated. Not only this, however, but being able to communicate with the locals gives us a much better insight into the culture of the country that we are visiting than any guide book could ever do. Even a single word and the context and frequency of its use can speak volumes about a whole nation’s way of life. The Spanish word ‘mañana’ for example, literally means ‘tomorrow’, but more often refers to ‘some unspecified time in the future’. Not only does appreciating the difference help visitors to better understand the laid-back attitude of the Spanish people, but it could save them much frustration and disappointment.

As to how a smattering of the language can help you to save money, just think for a second about local taxi drivers who are notorious for overcharging tourists. If you can’t speak even a few words in his tongue, how are you going to be able to check the fare up front or argue the toss at the end of the journey? The reality is that you are much less likely to get ripped off if you speak at least a few words in their language, as they will assume that you already know your way around and haven’t just stepped off the boat.

English speakers have it easier than anybody else in the world when it comes to communication. Wherever we go, we can almost bank on there being somebody who will understand us, but in many ways speaking the international language of the world makes us lazy and robs us of a richer experience when travelling abroad. Before you set off, grab yourself a phrase book and practice a few of the basics to get you started. The locals will be only too happy to help you improve your language skills once you arrive.

Trying to keep children occupied when you are travelling on holiday can be a nightmare. What to us may be nothing more than a short hop and a few hours of inconvenience can feel like a lifetime of boredom and frustration to them. Away from their familiar surroundings and their beloved toys, and often without much of an idea as to what to expect when they eventually reach their destination, the whole experience just makes them nervous, cranky and downright difficult.

Unless you happen to live and be staying right next door to your departure and arrival airports, the chances are that it isn’t just the flight that your children are going to have to endure either, but probably a car or coach ride at each end too. If you don’t go prepared, it won’t just be the children’s tempers that will have reached boiling point by the time you get there – your blood pressure could well be off the scale too!

The trick to keeping most children calm and agreeable during long journeys is largely down to giving them your attention. It is easy to forget that all the chasing around and the upheaval can be unsettling for youngsters, but by organising everything that you need for your journey so that it is readily to hand, you can focus on providing reassurance and keeping them happily occupied.

As well as console games, miniature versions of board games (which are easily available in most toy stores or at the airport) and miniature packs of playing cards can be a great way to pass the time whilst travelling and during the waiting times at airports. Websites such as http://www.activityvillage.co.uk/games_for_car_journeys.htm and

http://www.smartstart-toys.co.uk/article_09_Great_kids_games_for_Car_Journeys.php offer lots of suggestions for games which can be played on car journeys, but many are also suitable for other situations too, or can be adapted to fit. Even some drawing paper or a colouring book and some crayons will help to keep little ones entertained for a while, but if you can, try to vary their activities to stop boredom creeping in.

For many young children, airports can of course offer lots of excitement, so be sure to find a spot where you can watch the planes take off and land. Not only is it a great way to keep them occupied, but often the excitement helps them to overcome any trepidation that they might feel about being up in the air.

Above all, if your child has a favourite cuddly toy, then don’t forget to take it along. When everything around them feels so strange, their familiar friend will provide them with lots of comfort – and of course they can start a whole collection of photos of bunny or teddy taken all over the world!

Aside from standing out as one of the coastal resorts on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol to retain much of its traditional charm and avoid the fate of becoming littered with high-rise concrete buildings, Nerja has another very special claim to fame. Just three kilometres from its town centre is where you will find the spectacular Caves of Nerja, or Cueva de Nerja.

Discovered by a group of schoolboys who were hunting for bats in 1959, the caves proved to be an important find indeed, as they not only offered up proof of man’s existence in the area more than 20,000 years previously, but also contain the only known examples of cave paintings dating back to the Upper Palaeolithic era, somewhere between 10,000 and 50,000 years ago. Although what is known as the Show Gallery was opened up to the public the year after its discovery, the Upper and New Galleries were not discovered until 1960 and 1969 respectively. Even now, only the various ‘halls’ which go to make up the Show Gallery are fully open to the public, although some of the other chambers and caverns can be explored by over 14 year-olds joining a speleological group, details of which are available by calling or visiting the Caves.

The total length of the caves is said to extend to 4,283 metres, but the halls which go to make up the Show Gallery and which have been developed for tourists reach only about a third of this distance. With steps, concrete walkways and a lighting system which highlights the magnificent stalagmites and stalactites and cave walls, which look in places as though they have been hand-carved from candle wax, the spectacle is one which is certain to leave any visitor awe-struck at the ingenuity of Man and Mother Nature alike. The Hall of the Cataclysm, itself more than 100 metres long and 50 metres wide, is home to the highest stalactite in the world, standing at an impressive 32 metres and measuring 13 metres by 17 metres at its base.

The Hall of the Cascade or Ballet, which is close to the Entrance Hall, plays host every June to the underground Festival of Music and Dance where one can only wonder as to the quality of the acoustics. The auditorium is set up with only around a hundred metal seats for spectators, so anyone thinking about attending should enquire about tickets well in advance.

You can get a wonderful sneak preview of what you can expect to see by watching the video below. If you are visiting the Costa del Sol, the Nerja Caves are a sight definitely not to be missed!
